The Kliuchevskoi volcano, located on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, erupted on Wednesday following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake registered hours earlier off the country’s coast, which triggered widespread tsunami alerts across numerous Pacific nations.

Russia’s Geophysical Service announced in a statement on its Telegram channel that the eruption “has already begun,” following what is considered one of the strongest earthquakes in recorded history.

The stratovolcano is one of the largest active volcanoes in Eurasia and features a main cone with a crater approximately 700 meters in diameter. It also has around 80 secondary explosive craters and ash cones scattered along its slopes.

The volcano is located about 30 kilometers from the town of Kliuchi, in the Ust-Kamchatski district, home to some 4,500 residents.
